Indonesia, the heaven of sea garden

by Didit Yunanto

The most famous diving site in Indonesia is around small island facing the city of Manado. The city is located on the northern tip of Sulawesi island which is the biggest city on the north east of Indonesia since the Dutch colonization. The beauty of Manado as the capital city of North Sulawesi is comparable with the interesting under water garden and life of the water around the cape. North Sulawesi has many small islands around the cape, the biggest is Bunaken island, and many smaller islands are also a good site for diving recreation and serious diving program on the area. To reach Manado one has to fly from Jakarta or Denpasar Bali to Makassar city, and from Makassar to Manado with or without stop at Palu city, the capital city of Central Sulawesi. There is an international flight by Silk Air also from/to Singapore, yet the schedule is still not very good for traveling purpose. The reef of Bunaken Island is good all the way and 6 kilometers long island features no less than 13 diving sites. Bunaken is the centerpiece of the reserve and with careful observation and you can see majority of coral reef fishes found in Indonesia. Good coral growth usually extends down to 40-50 meters and in the deeper parts of the wall one can see sharks, large rays and Napoleon wrasse. Lekuan I, II and III are the most frequented site on Bunaken is a three-pronged coral wall in front of Lekuan Beach. Here is your good chance to see closely Napoleon wrasse, turtles, bump head parrotfish, scorpion fish and lionfish and on the reef edge swarms of anthias. The Lekuan is perfect based for diving beginner due to a little current and clear water. Kampung Bunaken is also good site for diving where you can find many variety of fish offers the same under water scenery as the Lekuan Site. Bunaken Timur is more separated than west and south bunaken, a little bit sloping profile where you can find white tip sharks. Sachiko's Point is steep wall prowled by big fish including large Tuna and Turtles. Mike's Point feature wall and a pinnacle, the coral growth including large, showy gorgonians is very good. Raymond wall with good hard and soft coral growth and some nice whip corals. Tengah is about the middle of Bunaken's western reef face. Mandolin just south of Tengah offers schooling fusiliers and good coral growth. The wall here is best at depths of 30-35 meters. Fukui Point also called Stingray Point has a stepped profile, the reef top is at 2-4 meters and then slopes down with several short but steep and drops. Cela-Cela in the crook of the reef along the south face offers many of the same charms as the popular Lekuan sites.

Scuba Diving South East Asia

by Chris Chew

This article describes some of the better dive sites in South East Asia. As a scuba diver, you will probably know that scuba diving in South East Asia has always been very popular because of its vast species of marine life and rich diversity of colorful corals.
As a matter of fact, there are many world class dive sites in this region and with its excellent underwater visibility, South East Asia is indeed a scuba diver's haven. So, here are some of the top dive sites in South East Asia many of which I have dived in several times.
We shall start with Indonesia and of course, the island of Bali cannot be left out. Perhaps the most dived site in Bali is the Liberty wreck. The wreck was a US army logistic ship sunk by Japanese submarine torpedoes during the last world war.
Liberty wreck lies in the depth of about 10m (32ft) to 30m (100ft) over 120m (385ft) of the sea bed. Divers can see guns, toilets, ship anchor chain among other things of a typical shipwreck. The wreck is heavily encrusted with corals and brightly decorated with gorgonian sea fans and sea anemones.
Scuba divers will also encounter large schools of trevally and more than 400 species of marine fishes and even exotic colonies of elusive garden eels.
Similan island in Thailand is another interesting dive site. Similan is located off the coast of Khao Lak which was hit badly by a Tsunami 2006. Nine granite islands made up the Similan islands. These islands are covered by luxuriant tropical rainforests surrounded by pristine white beaches and turquoise blue water.
This area is a protected national park. Below the water lie a sprawling underwater garden of deep canyons, coral gardens, huge granite boulders, caves and walls. Liveaboard scuba diving is the norm here.
Sipadan Island in Malaysia was made famous by Jacques Cousteau's documentary entitled Ghost Of The Sea Turtles. This is an oceanic island which is not connected to any continental shelf that rises about 2000 ft on an awesome limestone pinnacle and mushrooms out at the surface.
Many dive magazines have named Sipadan as one of the best dive sites in the world and reported to have the largest variety of soft corals in the world. At Sipadan, scuba divers will encounter exciting drift dives, fascinating coral formations, turtles, lobsters, barracudas and even various species of sharks.
Manado, northen Sulawesi, Indonesia is the gateway to world class dive spots in the Bunaken National Park. Muck diving, meaning diving for little critters on the seabed in Manado bay is the norm here. In this part of Indonesia, you will encounter exhilarating wall dives, drop offs, huge napoleon wrasse, reef sharks and also another shipwreck.
Layang Layang in Malaysia is a breathtaking atoll. It is part of a shoal group in the South China Sea known as the Spratly islands. Here, massive numbers of barracuda roams the water, large pelagic fishes and sharks make this place home. Do not be surprised if you are investigated by a school of hammerhead sharks.

Why Backpacking is the Cheapest Way to Travel the World

by Harriet Williams

Travelling the world was once a privilege reserved only for the very rich. But with the drop in accommodation, flight and other travel costs in the past few decades, it is entirely possible to go around the world on a smaller budget. The best way? backpacking.
Accommodation
With the rise in the number of travellers embarking on global travel increasing each year, the tourist industry of some of the world's most popular destinations have had no choice but to follow suit. From London to Lahore, Brisbane to Beijing, cities and towns are now home to many affordable hostels or low grade hotels where a single night stay can amount to little more than $20. Some of these cheaper alternatives aren't half bad either. You can expect all the mod cons of a western home and even indulge in the free meals included in some hostel deals. A key reason to kick-start any backpacking journey.
Flights
Low budget airlines have sprung into dominance during the last decade meaning those wanting to hop short distances between countries can do so for a price comparable to that of a long haul bus journey. Air Asia serves many popular destinations in Southeast Asia including Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia, where return tickets can cost as low as $35. Western Europe is where the trend started with lines like Ryanair and Easyjet providing cheap flights between the UK and the major capitals of Western Europe. Air travel is now a completely feasible (and flexible) part of the average backpacking itinerary.
Equipment
It used to be that going abroad meant packing three quarters of your house in fear of not getting the luxuries of home in places abroad. Not so. Most destinations hot on the gap year trail are full of markets, shops and supermarkets that stock everything back home (and are often times cheaper). Suitcases are a thing of the past and as any backpacker worth their salt will know, the key to a great travel experience is to pack as lightly as possible as you can always depend on getting the things you need out on the road. From books, to blankets, to medical supplies, you needn't worry about not being able to get something on your backpacking travels.

The Informed World Traveler: Yellow Fever Immunization Exceptions

by Slava

You are booked and eagerly awaiting your trip. Are shots required before take-off? This is a great question--but it does not have a one-size-fits-all answer. The need for immunization depends on a variety of factors. These factors include age, health history, pregnancy status and travel destination. Depending on where you are headed a yellow fever immunization may be necessary. It actually may be the law, as several countries demand a certificate from the world traveler stating they have receive the yellow fever vaccine before they will allow entry.
As of the writing of this article numerous places around the globe are red-flagged by the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention. Immunizations are necessary for individuals traveling to tropical and subtropical regions (dengue), Dominican republic (Cholera), Asia (chikungunya fever), Russia and Takjikistan (polio), and Indonesia (rabies). Yellow fever is in a class of its own, and is prevalent in numerous hotspots around the world. Anyone planning a trip anywhere in Africa or Central and South America should be immunized for yellow fever to ensure safe trip. The following is a list of who should not, under any circumstance, receive the vaccination.
The following is list of criteria which excludes a person from receiving the immunization:
• Due to the possible risk of developing viral encephalitis the vaccine should not be administered to infants under the age of six months. In many cases the vaccination should be held-off until the child is over 12 months.
• All pregnant women. This is due to the fact that there is a small chance of the fetus becoming infected with the disease through the mother.
• Any persons hypersensitive to eggs. Due to the fact that the vaccine is prepared in embryonic eggs, it is prudent that anyone allergic to eggs stay clear of the vaccine.
• Anyone with an already weakened immune system due to HIV/AIDS or anyone whose immune system has been altered through leukemia or lymphoma or through drugs or radiation treatment.
A written waiver will be accepted by most countries for any of the above stated medical issues. It is recommended that a written waver be obtained from an embassy or consulate official before departure. These officials will need a Travel Clinic physician's letter explaining the reason for the waiver written on the physician's letterhead.

Prices maybe established fix in department stores, yet normally it is possible to bargain on the price of goods and services throughout the country, from unmetered taxis to souvenir stands. The rule of thumb when it comes to bargaining business is to start low, then slowly let the shopkeeper bring up the price to a third or half of his/her original quoted price, depending on what you're buying and where you're making the purchase. The shopping hours here are from 08:30 to 20:00, with some shops closed on Sundays. In Muslim areas, some shops are closed for a few hours around Friday lunchtime for prayers.

Bali is a treasure trove of fine art and handicrafts, antique and semi-antique furniture, paintings, delicately carved jewelry, wood and stone carvings, masks, woven and dyed fabrics.
Bargaining in markets, shops and art shops, is normal practice and getting a good price depends largely on one's bargaining prowess. As bargaining forms a large part of the fun of shopping in Bali, remember to carry cash, as not all places accept credit cards - and be good humored. Shops are usually open from 10am to 11pm.
International labels, local designer clothes plus skillful tailors and dressmakers offer reliable 24-hours services. Shops selling similar items are normally grouped together to make comparing prices easy, and if the shop you're in doesn't have a particular color or size, wouldn't it be easy to just pop over next door!
Jakarta Shopping
From unique handicrafts to fashion design labels and latest gadgets in technology, Jakarta has something for everyone. As diverse as the products are, so are the shopping environments. Like any capital city, world-class mega-malls, stacked with international brands, are high-end and much swarmed by both locals and tourists. Beyond the air conditioned walls of the contained shopping centers, downtown Jakarta (the old neighborhoods around the South of the city) displays abundance of stores selling various products, including batiks, silks and unique handicrafts.
'Pasars' (markets) are jam packed with interesting finds, hence entails a lot of patience along with good bargaining skills. The usual procedure is to start off with a counter offer of 40% of the asking price and settle at 50%-60% of the original asking price.

How to Budget Southeast Asia Travel?

by mTravel

Asia is the world's larges and most populous continent with diverse cultures and fascinating people. This article will be concentrating more on the Southeast Asia region as it provides terrific value for budget travelers and you can travel from country to country overland effortlessly. You can travel easily through Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Burma/Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia by land or with budget airlines.
Do plenty of research as it will save you money, time and frustration. Plan your day and how you are going to your destinations. Unnecessary transportation costs because of poor planning and indecision can really add up, so plan a logical route for your day and how you're going to get from place to place. Look at budget travel guides like "Lonely Planet" or "Let's Go" or "Trip Advisor". These guides will give you useful information to specific countries while you embark on your Asian Adventure and soak up the culture!
Transportation
Bundled flights, all Asia air pass or even budget/low cost Asian airlines can significantly reduce the cost of your airfare. If time permits, using trains or buses for long trips between cities is another cheap alternative and you would be able to sight-see while you en route to your next destination. Cathay Pacific Airways has one of the most popular air passes from the United States. Prices start at $999 for Hong Kong and two other Asian destinations (flies to 18 Asian destinations), and you have 21 days to use it. You can add cities and time for an additional cost.
Accommodation
For the adventure seekers, you can just book the first night's accommodation in advance and then look for a cheap place to stay locally, and look around upon arrival for the cheapest accommodation. Backpackers should consider staying in hostels as you would get to meet other backpackers, share experiences and exchange information on places to stay and must see attractions.
Accommodation in Asia can be very cheap. There are beach huts in India for less than US$3 a night, and in many Southeast Asian countries US$10 is more than enough for a decent double room. You can also consider staying on the outskirts of a city or even in a nearby town or village. Rates are far cheaper and it allows you to immerse yourself more deeply into the culture.
Food
Forget about fine dining when you are traveling. Nothing will drain your budget faster than a few ritzy restaurants. The best food in Asia is found on the street. Look where the locals eat. In Asia, most food is fresh and not preserved. They are very cheap and can be just as good as restaurant food. Most are clean, but be careful with any meat you eat. Watch the locals. If what they are eating looks good, give it a try. It doesn't matter if you don't speak the language. Just point and smile. They will be happy to feed you. Southeast Asian street food is not just affordable but also delicious.
Also, leave your diet at home. You didn't come to Asia to eat healthy. Enjoy the delights of Asian cooking. If the food doesn't look safe, opt for fast food.
Lastly, two more tips that would really give you the extra mile on your adventure. Bargaining and theft prevention! Bargaining is a must and customary in most Asian countries. Start low because tourists are always quoted a higher price than locals. Theft prevention is often overlooked, but very necessary precaution. Money belts, locks and a watchful eye can prevent a theft that could put a major dent in your travel funds. Places like Japan and Singapore generally have very little petty theft, but in poorer countries like those in Southeast Asia more caution is necessary.
In summary, I hope these tips are useful for your planning a Budget Southeast Asia Travel and be pro at it!
Wishing you the best,
Ming Chua

Travel Insurance During an Earthquake-Tsunami Combined Disaster

by Bobby Hall

An earthquake-tsunami combined catastrophe is among the most widely feared natural disasters today. Any place that has experienced such a terrifying event sustains heavy damage and suffers from a massive loss of life. One only needs to look at what happened to people from Aceh in Indonesia and Japan to know that these events are not a joke. It does not matter if one is a local or a visitor to the area. The disasters make no distinction on who they affect and kill. These relatively unpredictable disasters are periodic reminders why travel insurance is a necessity regardless of where you are going.

These kinds of disasters cause all types of disruptions for an unlucky visitor in the area. Other than kill, they seriously injure people in various ways to the extent a person needs intensive medical treatment or repatriation. An earthquake-tsunami combo can strand a traveller in the area long after they are supposed to go home or continue on in their journey. They will be forced to scramble with thousands of others in rebooking for their flight, and pay extra to their place of accommodation. They could also make people lose or destroy the belongings of a person in the midst of chaos and destruction of the area, not to mention money.

Dealing with the traumatic event and its accompanying problems is already very stressful. Facing them while uninsured, however, leads to a double-whammy that affects someone not only physically and psychologically but also financially. With travel insurance, Sydney-based travellers can expect the firms covering them to

a) cover the unexpected expense of rebooking a flight cancelled by the disaster,
b) reimburse them for the alternative travel expenses they incurred trying to get away from the disaster zone,
c) assist travellers by covering the extra days you were forced to spend in your accommodation by the event,
d) pay for all medical expenses that were the result of serious injuries sustained in the earthquake-tsunami combo catastrophe,
e) recompense them for the money, bags, and other personal belongings that were lost, damaged, or stolen during the event,
f) compensate for accidental deaths that occurred during that time, and
g) reimburse them for the disruption to the journey the incident caused.

Insurance cannot make someone recover psychologically from these experiences. It does, however, allow them to not stress about the unexpected expenses they bring. This in effect frees up the mind of the covered person to worry about more important matters, such as getting help and going home. Getting travel insurance, Sydney residents, is easy and fast. It is affordable and can be done in a few minutes.

Major natural disasters such as an earthquake-tsunami combo can strike when you least expect it. They are tragically destructive reminders why people should never forget to get travel insurance. While it cannot protect you from the problems and trauma these events bring about, they can at least cover you financially, allowing you to worry about more important things. Keep that in mind next time you plan your trip abroad.

Montgomerie Defends Westwood, Tells U.S. Players to Travel More

by Discountwholesalegolf

Europe's successful Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie has jumped to the defence of world number one Lee Westwood and said if U.S.-based players were concerned about the European resurgence in the world rankings they should join Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson in playing more tournaments overseas scotty cameron newport 2 .
The 38-year-old Westwood reclaimed the top ranking when he won the Indonesian Masters last week but the Briton's mantle has been questioned because he had not won a major tournament.
"It's true Lee Westwood as number one has not won a major but we also have a world number one in ladies' tennis as well who has not won a major," Montgomerie said at the launch of the Monty's Monthly Medal charity initiative, which will help raise funds for the construction of two cancer centres in Scotland scotty cameron newport 2 cheap.
"Major championships are one way or the other. I almost got to number one in the world without winning a major and if I had of won the '97 Scottish Open at Loch Lomond I'd have been world number one also without winning major.
"So it goes on performance and over two years Lee Westwood has more points than anyone else and he deserves his place. There's no question about it.
"What that proves is consistency, and not just because you've won a big tournament as it is reflected in what you've done in all the others.
"So Lee Westwood is rightfully the best golfer in the world right now and to suggest otherwise is wrong."
Westwood, who first went to number one last November, reclaimed the top ranking from Germany's Martin Kaymer, who is now ranked two, with Briton Luke Donald third, with his victory in Indonesia scotty cameron putters cheap.
Six of the world's top eight players are European and Montgomerie added any of the PGA players who had concerns about that, should follow the example of Mickelson (fourth) and Woods (sixth), who do play around the world.
"Tiger (Woods) has always travelled about the world and been a global player, we've seen Phil (Mickelson) in recent years travel to European Tour events in the Far East and he was in Abu Dhabi this year which is great," Montgomerie said.
"But it was the Americans who dominated the world rankings for the last 10 years, so what are they really complaining about?
"They were getting more points than we were here in Europe for a long time.
"The only reason they're complaining is that the more top ranked players you have in European events, like Dubai earlier this year and Wentworth next month, the more points you generate.
"The BMW PGA is open to the top-50 in the world whether or not you are a European Tour member or not, so if the Americans are worried about the rankings why not come to Europe and play Wentworth?"

Welcome to Jogjakarta: Indonesia's City of History, Culture and Higher Learning

by Exotissimo Travel

Jogjakarta is the capital of Jogjakarta Special Region Province, which is in the southern part of Java. It is also common to see the city and province being spelled as Yogyakarta or even referred to Joga. The city is renowned for being a center of Javanese art and drama as well as being a center for higher education in Indonesia.
The main population in the city is of Javanese origin. However, with the number of universities in Jogjakarta, the city has become something of a college town. As a result, there are people from many different backgrounds and ethnicities living in the city, making it one of Indonesia's most diverse areas.
During the 16th and 17th centuries, Jogjakarta was the seat of the Javanese empire. Many of the empire's roots and traditions are still present in the city today, which can captivate visitors to the city.
Being one of Indonesia's oldest cities, Jogjakarta offers visitors many sights and sounds. One of the must see heritage building is Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono's Palace. This is a classic example of grand, elegant Javanese architecture. It was completed in 1756.
The city also presents a nice array of Dutch colonial architecture. One such example is at Benteng Vredeburg. It is a Dutch fort located in front of Gedung Agung (the President's Palace). Some warfare items from the past such as cannons are still present there. Kotabaru is another example of Dutch colonial influence. It used to be a residential area for Dutch officials with a few heritage homes scattered around as well as a colonial style church, a stadium and a monastery.
Some of the art the city is known for includes its silver work, its leather puppets used for shadow plays and its unique batik dyed fabric. Jogjakarta is also known for its gamelan music, which was developed in the courts during the height of the Javanese Empire. The city is also a headquarters for the country's underground art scene. It is home to many independent filmmakers, musicians, visual artisans and stage performance artists.
Due to the city's important role in achieving independence, Jogjakarta is also home to several memorials and museums. Yogya Kembali Museum, and Fort Vredeburg Museum are two major war/independence exhibitions.
There are also other interesting museums of other topics to visit as well. The Sonobudoyo Museum displays numerous Javanese archeological artifacts such as puppets, masks, textiles and musical instruments. The Kekayon Museum is an exhibition solely dedicated to wayangs (Indonesian puppets). It is divided into ten sections, with each section displaying a vast array of wayangs from various places in Indonesia.
The city of Jogjakarta may be in one of the country's smallest provinces, but both the city and province are some of Indonesia's more popularly visited spots. You can see why with Exotissimo's Highlights of Jogjakarta and Surroundings tour. This three-day program immerses you with the colorful Jogjakarta culture. You will get great insight into the city and its surroundings while not being too strenuous as well making it a perfect way to explore and relax at the same time. Meet the Toraja: One of Indonesia's Most Fascinating and Traditional Ethnic Peoples

by Exotissimo Travel

The Toraja is an ethnic group that lives in the Tana Toraja Regency in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. About 450,000 Torajans still live there today. Many are Christians and Muslims that continue to adhere to their traditional animist beliefs and practices.
Before the arrival of the Dutch, the Torajans did not have any distinction of themselves as an ethnic group. They lived in the highlands and identified with their villages rather than with their ethnic identity or background. That all changed with the arrival of Dutch missionaries and the opening of Tana Toraja Regency to the world in the 20th century, which eventually aroused the Torajan's ethnic curiosity. This eventually led to the concept of Toraja identity and affiliation, a concept that was very foreign to them before the arrival of the West.
The geography of Tana Toraja, where the Toraja live is dominated by green rice fields and tall limestone cliffs with misty mountains dominating the backdrop. Traditional Tongkonan houses built by the Toraja ethnic people also make up the scenery here. These are quite distinguishable buildings, with its most prominent features being its upward sloping roofs. On closer inspection, one would also notice red, black and yellow wood carvings on the buildings' walls. The house is central to the lives of the Torajans because it is the residence of the extended family (the concept of family is very important to them, so much so that people often marry distant cousins). Each of these Tongkonans are given a name, which then becomes the village's name.
The Torojans also practiced a class society (which was then abolished by the Dutch in 1909). The three classes were noblemen, commoner and slaves. Class is inherited from the mother. Some people are able to marry up into the class system, but this is a double-edged sword because for the other partner, marrying down was considered taboo. People may also voluntarily become slaves in order to pay off their debt.
The Torajans are perhaps best known for their unique (others might call it strange) and elaborate funeral rituals. Before the ceremony, a deceased individual's body can be kept for years until the money is saved for the funeral. Once the funeral gets started, ritual dances and buffalo fights are held as part of the ceremony. In addition, pigs and buffaloes are slaughtered, signifying the release of the deceased individual's soul into the afterlife. The more rich and powerful the person, the more buffalo and pig is slaughtered, making the journey to the afterlife quicker. Then, the body is buried inside a cave, a tree or left hanging off an edge of a cliff. For the Torojans, funerals are a celebration of the deceased person's entry into the afterlife. Birthdays are practically non-events and weddings are almost dull when compared with the funeral ceremony. Most of the funerals are held during the dry season, from July to September.
The Torajans are certainly one of the region's most interesting ethnic groups. You can learn more about the people, their culture and their land with Exotissimo's South Sulawesi: Toraja Discovery tour. This program will certainly broaden your horizons as you immerse yourself into unique lifestyle of the people here. Be amazed at the off-the-beaten excursions to various villages as you experience their warm hospitality and dine their traditional fares. Where Can You Find a Dragon? Do They Really Exist? Well, Come to Indonesia and See the Komodo Dragon Yourself

by Exotissimo Travel

The Komodo Dragon is the world's largest species of lizard found only in the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, and Gili Motang. They can grow to a length of 3 meters and weigh more than 90 kilograms. Despite its huge size, these animals are pretty agile, can climb trees and swim really well. They are one of the world's most unique animals and are can sometimes be the sole reason for visitors to visit these Indonesian islands.
So, why are the lizards so big? Island gigantism is a suggested theory. It explains that animals stranded on an island with no natural predators tend to grow to a very large size when compared with their mainland relatives. Large mammalian carnivores are often absent in islands because of their complex habitat requirements. So, in order to fill the biological niche on the islands in which they live, Komodo Dragons have evolved to grow to tremendous sizes.
Because of their massive size, Komodo Dragons dominate the ecosystems in which they live. They usually eat carrion but are also known to prey on a wide range of invertebrates, birds and mammals. They have been known to take down small deer and water buffaloes. Some eyewitnesses have reported seeing a Komodo Dragon eating a 40 kilogram pig in 20 minutes. Because of their loose jaws, flexible skull and expandable stomach, Komodo Dragons can consume huge chunks of their food whole and in certain cases, even swallow entire animals. These lizards may also resort to cannibalism, sometimes eating smaller Komodo Dragons or their adversaries after a fight.
The Komodo Dragon's teeth are frequently covered by gingival tissue, resulting in its saliva being frequently tinged in blood. Because of this, its mouth is full of bacteria. Even if its prey survives a Komodo Dragon attack, the infection from the bite will usually kill it later. Additional research has suggested that these animals may have a venom gland on its lower jaw that can paralyze its prey.
The Komodo Dragon is in the vulnerable species list and it is believed that there are about 5,000 left in the wild. Because of this concern, Komodo National Park was founded in 1980 with the Wae Wuul and Wolo Tado Reserves opening later to further protect these animals. Some factors contributing to the animal's diminished numbers include volcanic activity, fire, hunting, poaching of prey species by humans, and changes in its habitats.
The Komodo Dragons are truly amazing creatures. What better way to learn about these animals than in their natural habitat? You will also snorkel among enchanting coral gardens and visit traditional villages set in untamed volcanic landscapes with Exotissimo's Flores & Komodo Explorer tour. Combining land exploration of Flores with a two-night cruise around Komodo and Rinca Islands, this Indonesia tour through the Flores archipelago promises an unforgettable experience in a lesser known part of Indonesia. Travel Up Bali's Mount Agung and Discover Besakih Temple, Bali's Most Important Hindu Sanctuary

by Exotissimo Travel

Besakih Temple (otherwise known as Pura Besakih or the Mother Temple of Besakih) is Bali's biggest and most important Hindu temple sanctuary. It is in Besakih Village on the southwestern slopes of Mount Agung, an active volcano. Its mountainous location offers visitors beautiful views of the surrounding area and the distant ocean.
Some of the temples are believed to be over a thousand years old. The temple complex consists of 22 temples scattered across parallel ridges in an area about three square kilometers. There are terraces and stairs which ascend to numerous courtyards and gateways that leads up to the main spire. This design serves two purposes. First, it represents one's climb up Mount Meru, a sacred mountain in Hindu cosmology considered to be the center of all the physical, metaphysical and spiritual universes. Secondly, it allows visitors to ascend up and closer to Mount Agung, which itself is considered sacred.
The complex's symbolic center and most important temple is Pura Penataran Agungand. The main entrance is a grand stairway which ascends through the terraces and lined with statues of gods and demons. Only Hindu worshippers are allowed to use it, visitors instead must go through a parallel set of stairs outside of the temple's walls.
Inside the main courtyard is a large open space for worshippers. At the back of the courtyard are three tall structures representing Mount Meru that are dedicated to three Hindu gods, Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu. There are inner courtyards right behind the main one, which itself houses many more Mount Meru representations.
Besakih is home to numerous festivals, the most colorful of which is Odalan (simply known as temple festival). This festival celebrates every Balinese shrine's founding and many believe that spirits descend from the heavens for three days during its anniversary. People will 'entertain' the spirits with food, prayers, dances and other activities. There could be as many as seventy festivals held at the complex each year since there is a yearly celebration for each shrine. A shrine's Odalan occurs every 210 days instead of 365, it being based on the Balinese wuku calendar system.
Mount Agung 's last eruption occurred in 1963. It was one of the biggest eruptions recorded during the 20th century, which killed more 1,700 people and also threatened the sanctuary. The lava however, missed it by mere inches. The survival of the temple was considered a miracle by the Balinese people and a sign of the god's awesome power but appreciation towards the monument.
If you would like to explore some of Bali's most beautiful temples on two wheels, then Exotissimo's Besakih Temple and Sidemen adventure day trip tour is for you. This guided full day program combines visits to Klungkung and Besakih temples to learn about the religious and spiritual traditions of the Balinese and take a bike ride through spectacular, typical rural villages for a taste of the local lifestyles. You can contact us if you would like to integrate this program into one of our Indonesia tours in Bali.

Be one of the Few in the World to Touchdown at West East, otherwise known as West Timor, Indonesia

by Exotissimo Travel

West Timor is Indonesia's westernmost area of East Nusa Tenggara Province and the Indonesian half of the Timor islands (East Timor borders it to the east as well as occupying a small northern area on West Timor and is a completely sovereign nation). It is one of Indonesia's less visited destinations but just as captivating as anywhere else in the country. Interestingly, the name West Timor is an oxymoron in the Indonesian language, when translated into English it means 'west east'.
West Timor is characterized by its rugged terrain, traditional villages and vast flora and fauna. Kupang is the provincial capital, West Timor's main seaport and base for further exploration of the area. That's not to say that there isn't much to do here. The National Museum displays a fine collection of fossils, items and relics from the province's different ethnic groups. The city's local market is an interesting place to integrate yourself with the people, as well as some of the island's signature textiles, handicrafts, food, snacks and other goods. The city also offers a nice blend of traditional and Dutch colonial architecture. Beyond the capital is a vast area of palm trees, rocky soils and central hills with the occasional bee-hive hut villages. West Timor also has some fabulous coastlines, mostly just empty beaches without any resorts or hotels at all.
It just wouldn't be Indonesia if there weren't any diving spots, wouldn't it? The waters around West Timor have some beautiful dive sites. Alor, a small island north of West Timor, offers world class diving and an opportunity to spot pilot whales and dolphins on your way to the dive location from the boat. West Timor is also becoming a popular place for game fishing. Marlins and sailfish have been caught by local fishermen on their hand lines before.
You are sure to experience a one of a kind holiday at West Timor. The fact that the area is relatively untouched by tourism ensures that the ways of life of the people here remain authentic. Included in Exotissimo's West Timor Trails tour is a drive to the village of Soe. On the way, you will pass through beautiful landscapes, rice terraces and jungles. Another stop on your way to Soe is Oebelo village, renowned for its crafting of the sasando, a unique instrument native to the area. After reaching Soe, you will encounter a traditional Timor village at Boti where you will get to see the fabulous ikat weavers before meeting the village King.
Indonesia is a huge country, made up of thousands of islands. There is just way too much to see and do there. Visit Exotissimo's Indonesia tours page for some guidance. Looking for your Dream Island Holiday? Look no further than the Gilis, Indonesia's Untouched Paradises

by Exotissimo Travel

Are you looking for a remote tropical island getaway? Are you tired of all the noise pollution and distractions commonly associated with popular beach and island destinations? If your answer was an astonishing 'yes' to these questions, then the Gili Islands in Indonesia may be right up your alley.
What are the Gili Islands? Where are they? The Gili Islands, otherwise known as the Gilis are a set of three islands just off the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia and approximately 35 kilometers off the eastern tip of Bali. The islands are Gili Trawangan (the biggest of the three), Gili Meno (the middle island) and Gili Air (the closest island to Lombok).
So, what do you think of when you imagine your perfect tropical island getaway? Maybe an image of you and your loved one or family on an island filled with shady palm trees with a refreshing beverage in hand listening to the hypnotic sounds of the ocean's waves and with absolutely nothing to break the peace? Dreams can become a reality!
The small sizes of these islands make motorized transportation totally unnecessary. In fact, all motorized vehicles are not permitted on the islands. Imagine yourself on a bicycle with the ocean by your side or in a horse drawn carriage and able to easily loop the island in just a matter of minutes. Or walking on the beach and loop back to your resort in just a couple of hours? All without a single car or motorbike to disturb the peace.
Oh, and don't forget, all three islands feature crystal clear blue ocean waters, spectacular coral reefs and some of the best dive spots in and around Lombok and Bali. The islands are only a couple of kilometers apart, making island hopping easy. But please, DO NOT SWIM TO THE OTHER ISLANDS! The currents between the Gilis are strong and very dangerous! Catch the shuttle boats instead. They are available throughout the day and are a fun and scenic way to traverse between the islets.
So, if you are interested in an experience at any/all of the Gili Islands, be warned: the pace of life is slow, the sands are powdery white and the waters are clear blue. In other words, if you are looking for a frantic way of life and all the hustle and bustle commonly associated with today's modern world, you should not be here. If you are looking to escape from all of that, then welcome to paradise!
Why not experience the Gilis with other beautiful Indonesian islands? With Exotissimo's Three Islands: Java - Bali - Lombok tour, we will take you on a memorable tour through some of Indonesia's most scenic and exotic islands, concluding with a visit to the Gilis. Each of these islands offers something unique that will no doubt enthrall and entertain in equal measures. Feel free to tweak any of our Indonesia tours or create your own program by visiting our tailor made page. Just tell us what you would like to do on your holiday and we will work towards your ideal vacation.

Indonesia's most Unique Animals and Tribes Spring to Life at Kalimantan. Experience it!

by Exotissimo Travel

If you are looking for a different Indonesian experience, away from the islands of Bali and Java, then Kalimantan is definitely for you. Wild, exotic and still relatively unexplored, Kalimantan is your ticket to some of the world's most untamed rainforests, animals and remote tribal villages.
So, you would like to experience the exotic, yet do not know where Kalimantan is. No worries, we've got you covered. Kalimantan is located on the northern half of Borneo Island. Geopolitically, the island consists of two other countries, Brunei and Malaysia. If you still can't find it on a map, here are some other clues. The Malay Peninsula and the Indonesian island of Sumatra are to the west. Java is to the south, to the east is Sulawesi and northeast of Kalimantan are the Philippines. Found it? Great, cuz that's where we'll be heading!
Kalimantan is best discovered by boat. In fact, it might as well be your hotel for the duration of the trip! The island's rivers and waterways lead to very beautiful scenes, such as riverside villages and markets. Use your camera to capture these colorful scenes!
Kalimantan is home to numerous tribes where ancient traditions, customs and clothing have remained unchanged for centuries. One of these tribes is the Dayak people, known for their large and intricate tattoos and huge body piercings. Learn more about the people and their customs by visiting their log houses and delving into their customs and traditions.
Due to its 'island' location, you will also be treated to some exotic and bizarre animals. One of these weird animals you may encounter at Kalimantan is the comically looking Proboscis Monkey. What makes it so funny? Its big red nose makes Pinocchio look like an amateur when it comes to lying and its round stomach looks like beer is the monkey's main diet. We may laugh at these traits, but the females are certainly attracted to it. Guys, take note!
Search the jungles for giant lizards, colorful birds, macaques and unusual species of kingfishers that are all lurking around and waiting for you to check them out! These animals are certainly unique!
Exotissimo's Kalimantan: Tribes and Villages tour brings the Indonesian section of Borneo to you! Examine the region in deeper and in greater detail than what any documentary can achieve. Meet the aforementioned Dayak people as well as the Dayak Kenyah tribe, the Isuy and the Kutai people. Discover how Batik is made by creating your own Traditional Garment in Jogjakarta, Indonesia

by Exotissimo Travel

Ever looked at beautiful traditional garments and wondered, "how did they do that?" Well, not only will your questioned be answered with our one day Jogja Batik Course, you will also actually make your own souvenir! Yes, make your very own batik that you can not only wear, but boast to your friends about the skill and technique you acquired in making your new Indonesian creation. This excursion is fabulous for travelers of all ages and creates a one of a kind souvenir of your Java experience.
So, what is batik? It is a piece of cloth that uses traditional wax-resist dyeing technique. The patterns are beautiful and mostly depict nature such as flowers or trees, of living things like people or animals or of traditional folklore. Batik is one of Indonesia's most traditional and famous crafts.
Traditional batik from Java is interesting. Batik from Jogjakarta tend to illustrate Java's conceptualization of the universe. Colors are usually indigo, dark brown and white with each representing Hindu Gods (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva respectively). These colors were readily used because the dyes were commonly available in those colors.
This day trip introduces you to the art of batik making for a fun and memorable hands-on session under the guidance of a local artisan. What are the steps? First off, you will apply melted wax onto the cloth before being dipped in dye. Most Javanese use a beeswax and paraffin wax combination. Why? Beeswax holds the fabric well and paraffin promotes cracking, a telling feature of batik. Gold dust can also be used to decorate the batik, applied using a special handmade glue. Don't worry, the gold will stick, even after washing. Next apply your thin wax lines and then hang it out to dry. And no worries, your creation will be sent to your hotel after it is fully dry.
Trips like these are meant for you to indulge in the country's natural gifts and colorful culture as much as possible in a single day. These go great with our Indonesia tours, fueling even more fun and memories into your holidays in this nation consisting of thousands and thousands of islands.

Gili Nanggu, Indonesia is also known as Paradise Island. Need we say more?

by Exotissimo Travel

We all yearn for that perfect beach holiday. Bright blue waters, white sandy beaches and the least amount of commercialization possible. What if we told you that this dream destination exists? Well, it does! Introducing Gili Nanggu, affectionately called Paradise Island by many.
So, where is Gili Nanggu? This small tropical island sits just of the southwest coast of Lombok (which is approximately a 20 minute ride). It seems that there are almost no resorts at all to speak of here (of course if you yearn for an extended stay, this can definitely be arranged in one of the few that exists in the island). Gili Nanggu boasts all the characteristics of a serene tropical beach destination. Corals are only meters away from the shoreline. The waters are warm, clean, blue and is home to an impressive array of fish. If you are on the island in the early morning or evening, make sure to watch the sunrise and sunset. It is majestic, no pun intended because the sun rises over Lombok's Mt. Rinjani and sets on Bali's Mt. Agung
At Gili Nanggu, privacy is guarantee. No beach traders, hawkers or unwelcome visitors will disturb the peace, because there aren't any, allowing you to enjoy your snorkeling, swimming, reading, sunbathing or relaxation in utmost privacy. All there is to disturb the peace are the hypnotic waves of the ocean. Oh, and of course the poetic sound of birds chirping and singing in the morning and throughout the day.
Well, there is more than Gili Nanggu on this day trip. This afternoon, proceed to Gili Kedis, a tiny island where there is time to relax and enjoy yet another slice of paradise. Many call this uninhabited island Honeymoon Island or Romance Island. You will see why.
After your time at these beautiful islands, head back to Lombok and back to your hotel. En-route, stop at Banyumulek pottery village. The village is one of the main clay producers on the island and home to some cool pieces of art which despite its deep traditional roots, is slowly being recognized in the international art community.
Ahhhh. Island bliss. You can make it happen by booking this day trip. It can easily be combined with your Indonesia tours. If you would like to extend your stay at Gili Nanggu, just contact us and we'll arrange it for you.

Bandung, Indonesia - Shopping & Volcanoes; Really!

by The Travel Manual

Bandung, the old administrative capital of Dutch colonial rule, is an incredible settlement set in the hills of Indonesia. Now known as the Jakarta elite's weekend playground, Bandung is host to a dizzying amount of factory outlet stores and so-called 'richman bungalows.' However, the imposing figure of Tangkuban Perahu, an active volcano about1.5hr from the city centre, reminds the traveler that nature is never far in Bandung and indeed, there is a deluge of stuff to do in Bandung, both in terms of shopping and eco-tourism.
Most of Bandung's population are of Sundanese descent, and hence they speak Sundanese, a variant of the official Bahasa Indonesia. There are a large majority of Muslims in Bandung. However, other major religious groups include Christianity, followed by Hinduism and Buddhism. There are many mosques and cathedrals of heritage that can be seen all around Bandung.
Accommodation
Hotels are plentiful in Bandung but take note that accomodation prices are noticeably higher than
in locations such as Bali or Lombok. We recommend Patradisa Budget Hotel at Jalan Wastu Kencana
as we feel it is value for money and the rooms are decently furnished and clean. Breakfast is included
and best of all, the hotel is within walking distance of Bandung's major malls and factory outlets.

Things to do
* Shopping
Bandung is definitely a place for all the shopaholics out there. There are many high quality fake items.Original goods are available in limited supply. Clothing, handbags, traditional handicrafts are all available in Bandung. Local shopping hotspots include Jalan Riau, Dago Street and Jalan Otto, where Pasar Baru, the 7-storied market and handicraft mega-store is located. You may have to take up to 2-3 days to fully explore and visit all the factory outlets in Bandung. However, shopping was not the main reason why The Travel Manual was there...
* Tangkuban Perahu Volcano
Tangkuban Perahu is a moderately active volcano 1.5 hrs north of Bandung. You can drive UP to the peak of Tangkuban Perahu, but strangely, not DOWN from it. Hence, the many local 'guides' will swarm towards you and offer their 'expertise' to scale down Tangkuban Perahu. If this is your first time here, we reluctantly advise you to pick a guide, who WILL overcharge you. At the peak, there will many local handicraft and strawberry sellers. There are also a few warongs at scenic locations where you can have a cup of coffee and enjoy the breathtaking scenery. Scaling down the volcano will take about 1 hour and you will pass by some steaming geysers and hot springs at the base of Tangkuban Perahu. You can have your feet massaged here with volcanic mud for about 20,000RP or alternatively, just dip your feet and relax in the plentiful hot springs around. This is a very touristy area, though.
* Kawah Putih Volcano
Kawah Putih ('White Crater') is an extinct volcanic crater located south-west of Bandung. The drive from Bandung city will take about 2 hours. There will be pickup vans at the base of Kawah Putih to take you up to the actual crater itself. Driving up with your own private vehicle is possible, but very expensive. These pickups only cost 15,000RP and use open-sided 'safari-style' pickup vans, which makes the ride up very interesting. The view of Kawah Putih itself is stunning and at times, surreal. Occasionally, the clouds will intermix with the sulphuric gases from the crater, forming this entirely white backdrop. A stunning location for photographs and a must-visit! A word of advice though,it gets really cold at the summit of Kawah Putih, so do bring along your jacket and gloves.
* Mount Papandayan
Mount Papandayan is located in the Garut Region, about 3 hours drive from Bandung. It is an active and highly unstable volcano that last erupted in 2002. Hire a guide at the base of the volcano and the trek up the volcano can take anywhere between 2 to 3 hours or an entire day, depending on the route you are taking. Along the way, you will pass by hissing sulphur vents and beautiful, eerily-white sulphur lakes. The stench of sulphuric gases is very strong here, so bring along a towel to cover your nose. At the summit of Mount Papandayan, there is a beautiful lake called Danau Hijau, which you can take swim in, if you want. Definitely a good place to snap great photos as the scenery is breathtaking. A must-go as you can get up-close to boiling craters and sulphur vents with no barriers. Do take your time to enjoy the scenery from the peak of Mount Papandayan.
* Maribaya Waterfalls
The Maribaya Waterfalls are located in Lembang, in the north of Bandung.Upon arrival at the Maribaya Waterfalls, we were disappointed as the waterfalls were not as shown in the brochures/online. However to our surprise, there was a National Park further down the trail called Juanda National Park, which houses historical World War 2 caves used by the Dutch and Japanese. The admission fee is 40,000RP per person to enter Juanda National Park. We then got ourselves ojeks(motorcycles) with local riders for the price of 20,000RP. They brought us down a small and rickety road into two caves,Goa Belanda (Dutch Cave) and Goa Jepang (Japanese Cave). A local guide will be present and a tour around each around 20, 000RP per group. The spooky feeling of being in the pitch-black caves will soon be overriden by the feeling of awe in being in such a historic location. The guide will even take you into the old interrogation and armoury rooms, so truly savour this unique experience.

Gili Islands, Indonesia - Asia's Premier Diving Site!

Being in any one of the Gili Islands is definitely an unique experience, considering the geography of the islands. It is just 20 minutes away from Lombok. An interesting fact is that no motorised vehicles are allowed on any of the 3 islands. Gili Meno has a population of only 400 people and fresh water has to be imported daily. What to do
* Scuba Diving/ Snorkeling
If you are at Gili Islands, you should not miss out on Snorkeling or Scuba Diving. You can purchase these packages from the local travel agencies. The price offered to us was 200,000RP for Snorkeling and 600,000RP for Scuba Diving inclusive of transportation. The best thing about it all is that even when you snorkel, the boats will take you to the middle of the sea where you can actually sea beautiful corals and marine life.
* Watersports
Gili Trawangan would be the island where you can do your watersports. They do not have jet-skis. However, they do have para-sailing, wake-boarding etc. Those keen on surfing can also surf. A good spot would be the southern end of the island. Surf boards are available for rent at the island. For any of the above activities you can approach any of the local travel agencies to make arrangements. Kayaking is also an activity to be considered.
* Deep Sea Fishing
Deep Sea Fishing is also one main reason why people go to Gili Islands. They have packages where you can stay on board for days they will take around the islands for good fishing spots. The Blue and Black Marlins are definitely a prize to aim for.
* Relax
Other than beach-related activities, the other thing which you could is relax and enjoy the tropical setting. One place you can visit is "Beautiful Life". It has a big screen television , 6 huts with DVD players. There are also live bands playing at night. Given the above setting, just sit back and enjoy..

Prambanan – the Pride of Hinduism in Java, Indonesia

by Exotissimo Traveler

What is Java's main religion? Well, the majority of Indonesia is Muslim, in fact it is the world's largest Muslim country in terms of population. So, it is the same in Java?
Yes it is, actually. But Indonesia is a very diverse country, with different people adhering to a vast array of faiths. One of which is Hinduism. And the greatest testament to the Hindu faith in Java is…Prambanan.
If you love to discover a destination's heritage and history, then visiting temples is a must. Java is home to many, one of which is the impressive ruins of Prambanan. Come here and witness some history. This is the largest Hindu complex in Indonesia, if not the entire Southeast Asia region. And its iconic tall and pointed roofs towering over the surrounding land have earned this complex recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Plus the fact that it has stood the test of time and remained standing after over 1100 years must have helped with the recognition too.
You would think that a large, massive and unique looking structure like Prambanan would be enshrined as the national symbol of the country. Well, in most cases, and most countries yes, that would be the case. But not here. Don't forget you have Borobudur nearby, another massive and impressive UNESCO Site. There are also several Hindu and Buddhist temples nearby, namely Candi Plaosan and Candi Sambisari, just to name a few.
Set aside a full day for temple exploration in Java (in fact, maybe even more), just because there's a whole bunch here! Start your Prambanan, Solo & Sukuh Temple daytrip at where else? From there, head over to Solo, home to visit Mangkunegaran Palace. The 18th century structure houses an extensive collection of 14th century jewelry, majestic silverworks, traditional Javanese weapons and classical dancing body ornaments. Feeling majestic yet?
Wait, there's more. Remember us mentioning about Candi Sukuh before? Well, you'll be treated by its 910 meter above sea level location, its pyramidal shape and spectacular jungle surroundings.

Culture, Heritage and Nature: Java is the Pulsating Heart of Indonesia

by Exotissimo Traveler

Did you know that Java is not only Indonesia's most populous island but also the world's? That's right, over 136 million people live in this 132,187 square kilometer piece of land. In other words, more than 60 percent of the country's citizens call this island home. Some other interesting facts: Java has more than 120 active volcanoes! Despite the population, the island is an enchanting region home to fertile highland plains, ancient archeological wonders and friendly people with age old traditions. We'll take you to the heart of the island to experience the island's highlights.

Jogjakarta will be your first foray into Java. The town is a lively art center and offers good shopping experiences, especially at Maliboro. Hop on a cycle rickshaw and experience the lively town firsthand. And plunge into the culture as you get your hands busy with batik making and your eyes busy with an evening traditional dance performance.

Jogjakarta is also popular for another thing; its close proximity to some amazing temples. And yes, you'll get to see these awesome relics. Mendut and Pawon temples serve as a good warm up to your archeological experience. These even pre-date Borododur, perhaps the world's largest Buddhist temple. And while you're at it, check out the jagged edged, rocket like Hindu temples of Prambanan.

And now your journey takes on a more natural twist, with some history and heritage thrown in of course. Enjoy the scenic two-hour drive to Wonosobo, the gateway to the Dieng Plateau. This is where a network of active volcanoes, a mineral lakes and ancient Hindu temples merge under the cool air (remember you are high above sea level, more than 2000 meters to be exact).

Now for some coffee. That should get you going. Head over to Ambarawa and get a firsthand account of traditional coffee harvesting at the Losari Plantation. And yes, you can have more than a sip or two. Another temple touring experience awaits at the 8th century Gedong Songo. This time, you'll admire the area on horseback, a fitting to recap your memorable and educational Central Java trip.
