Be one of the Few in the World to Touchdown at West East, otherwise known as West Timor, Indonesia

West Timor is Indonesia's westernmost area of East Nusa Tenggara Province and the Indonesian half of the Timor islands (East Timor borders it to the east as well as occupying a small northern area on West Timor and is a completely sovereign nation). It is one of Indonesia's less visited destinations but just as captivating as anywhere else in the country. Interestingly, the name West Timor is an oxymoron in the Indonesian language, when translated into English it means 'west east'.
West Timor is characterized by its rugged terrain, traditional villages and vast flora and fauna. Kupang is the provincial capital, West Timor's main seaport and base for further exploration of the area. That's not to say that there isn't much to do here. The National Museum displays a fine collection of fossils, items and relics from the province's different ethnic groups. The city's local market is an interesting place to integrate yourself with the people, as well as some of the island's signature textiles, handicrafts, food, snacks and other goods. The city also offers a nice blend of traditional and Dutch colonial architecture. Beyond the capital is a vast area of palm trees, rocky soils and central hills with the occasional bee-hive hut villages. West Timor also has some fabulous coastlines, mostly just empty beaches without any resorts or hotels at all.
It just wouldn't be Indonesia if there weren't any diving spots, wouldn't it? The waters around West Timor have some beautiful dive sites. Alor, a small island north of West Timor, offers world class diving and an opportunity to spot pilot whales and dolphins on your way to the dive location from the boat. West Timor is also becoming a popular place for game fishing. Marlins and sailfish have been caught by local fishermen on their hand lines before.
